Families in Homeless Shelters Increase 7% in 2009

According to a recent USA Today article, the number of homeless families in shelters increased 7% from 2008 to 2009.  According to a US government report, "The recession continued to take its toll as more families with children became homeless for the second straight year."  Read full article at USA Today.

  • Applicants to the Family Promise Program must be employed or employable
  • Applicants must be free from active substance abuse (amount of time in recovery dependent on assessment)
  • Applicants cannot be fleeing a domestic violence situation
  • Applicants who are eligible after an initial screening must be willing to complete a comprehensive clinical assessment for every member of the family
  • Applicants with an established mental health diagnosis must be medication compliant and/or in treatment with a local mental health facility (FPC volunteers are not trained to handle mental health emergencies)
  • Applicants must be willing to submit to a criminal background check and drug screens
  • Applicants must be willing to provide proof of income earned and money saved while in the program
