A Survey of Charlotte Homeless

This week, the Charlotte Housing Authority surveyed Charlotte area homeless men and women to determine who is chronically homeless in Charlotte. The Charlotte Housing Authority wants to use this information to learn what it might take to get these men and women off the streets permanently.

It is believed that there are approximately 6500 homeless people in Charlotte.  Of those, advocates believe there are 500 who are chronically homeless.

Julie Rose of WFAE, Charlotte's NPR station, spoke this week to a man who has been homeless in Charlotte for over 10 years.

Affiliate 149 Opens in Cabarrus County NC PDF Print E-mail

Family Promise of Cabarrus County becomes the 11th network in North Carolina.

This was a particularly challenging effort, with leadership, funding and fire code issues to overcome, but Board President Angela Orrock’s long-time commitment to the cause ultimately prevailed. Cabarrus County was once a major textile producing center but the Pillowtex factory closing in 2003 eliminated 1,000 jobs. The county’s single, dormitory-style shelter was unable to handle the influx of homeless families.

The Affiliate opens with 10 host congregations. The Day Center is a rebuilt outbuilding of Second Presbyterian Church in Kannapolis. Thrivent provided significant funding to make this possible. The director is Pam Smith, a Cabarrus County native who had been working in transitional housing in Virginia before returning home and taking the role of director.
