A Survey of Charlotte Homeless

This week, the Charlotte Housing Authority surveyed Charlotte area homeless men and women to determine who is chronically homeless in Charlotte. The Charlotte Housing Authority wants to use this information to learn what it might take to get these men and women off the streets permanently.

It is believed that there are approximately 6500 homeless people in Charlotte.  Of those, advocates believe there are 500 who are chronically homeless.

Julie Rose of WFAE, Charlotte's NPR station, spoke this week to a man who has been homeless in Charlotte for over 10 years.

Family Promise, the nation’s leading volunteer-driven nonprofit serving homeless families, and The Company Store, which has offered top quality pillows and comforters, sheets, towels, and home accessories since 1911, have partnered on the Buy One, Give One Comforter Donation Program to benefit homeless children across the country.

Summit, NJ (PRWEB) March 23, 2011 -- The Company Store has chosen Family Promise and other national non-profit organizations to work with on the Buy One, Give One Comforter Donation Program. For the duration of the initiative, The Company Store will donate a new comforter to a homeless child with every comforter purchased from their web site or catalog. Family Promise is pleased to be one of the organizations selected and is grateful to have received 3,000 new comforters to distribute among our affiliates nationwide—from Houston, to Burbank, to Boston, to Atlanta.

Karen Olson, President and Founder of Family Promise, said, “We are so thankful for The Company Store’s generous offer to include Family Promise in this welcome initiative. Not only will this benefit children as they seek shelter in our program, but it will also help to raise awareness of this national crisis. These comforters truly are wonderful gifts to families in need.”

Homeless families are now the fastest growing segment of the homeless population. Of the 3.5 million Americans that will be homeless at some point this year, 1.5 million of them will be families, with 60% being children. 1 in 50 children are homeless, their health and well-being jeopardized on a daily basis.

“We’re pleased to partner with charities nationwide on such a vital initiative,” said Dennis Warner, Chief Marketing Officer of The Company Store. “There are a significant number of homeless children in this country who do not sleep in their own home, in their own bedroom. The Company Store is committed to bringing some comfort to these children in need. We hope that the donated comforters will raise the spirits of thousands of children and their families as they work to rebuild their lives.”

Family Promise is comprised of 163 Affiliates across 41 states, engaging 130,000 volunteers nationwide. Last year, they served over 47,000 men, women and children in need. They offer a 5-program, comprehensive, integrated approach to mobilize communities and help families achieve sustainable independence.
